The Uralla Community Garden is a vibrant, volunteer-led space where people come together to grow fresh food, share knowledge and strengthen our community. Managed by Z-Net Uralla, the garden is a practical demonstration of how sustainable gardening can improve water security, food security and community resilience.
Whether you’re an experienced gardener or planting your very first seed, the garden is a welcoming place to learn, contribute and connect.
Water Security in Action
Water is one of our most precious resources, particularly in the New England region. The Community Garden showcases practical ways to grow productive gardens while using less water, including wicking beds, rainwater harvesting, mulching and soil improvement techniques that maximise moisture retention.
These methods not only keep the garden thriving but also provide ideas that local residents can adopt in their own backyards.
Growing Local Food
The garden demonstrates the importance of local food production and the role it can play in creating a more resilient community. By growing fresh produce close to home, sharing skills and encouraging sustainable practices, volunteers are helping people become more confident and self-sufficient while reducing reliance on long supply chains.

The heart of the Community Garden is its dedicated team of volunteers. Their passion, hard work and willingness to share knowledge have transformed the space into a thriving community asset that benefits everyone.
Z-Net Uralla supports the garden by providing management and governance, as well as securing funding that enables volunteers to bring ambitious projects to life.
To date, successful grants have delivered:
- Eight WaterUps wicking beds, demonstrating innovative, water-efficient food production.
- A 10,000-litre rainwater harvesting system, significantly improving the garden’s water security.
- A community greenhouse, creating opportunities for propagation, education and year-round growing.
These projects not only strengthen the garden itself but also serve as practical examples of sustainable solutions that can be replicated throughout the community.
Learn, Share and Get Involved
The Uralla Community Garden is more than a place to grow vegetables – it’s a place to grow skills, friendships and ideas. Working bees provide opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to learn about sustainable gardening, exchange knowledge and contribute to a shared community resource.
By combining volunteer passion with practical sustainability initiatives, the Community Garden is helping build a greener, more resilient future for Uralla – one garden bed at a time.
